About the Project:
Since publishing its first seed catalogue in 1855, Thompson & Morgan has flourished into the UK’s leading Mail Order Seed and Plant company. Thompson & Morgan extends its reach worldwide through an international website and a popular seed range available in major garden centres across Europe.
Thompson Morgan requested our assistance to replace cracked and broken glass in their Robinsons commercial glasshouse. They also required their glasshouse screen to be refurbished and a vent gear service.
- Glazing: Replacement of over 40 glass panes
- Gutter Clean: Ensuring free flow of rain collection
- Vent Gear: Service vent gear in Robinsons glasshouse, to include grease and check of rack & pinions, the removal of debris/moss from vent cills.
- Thermal Screen Replacement: To refurbish glasshouse thermal screen.

The Process:
Commercial Glasshouse Contracts Ltd provided a comprehensive solution tailored to address the specific needs of Thompson Morgan:
- Re-Glazing: Replaced old glazing with new, high-performance materials to improve insulation and energy efficiency. Pushed up slipped glasses in roof side and gable ends, sealing glass into the ridge with silicone to block up the gaps created by frame movement.
- Gutter Clean: Cleaned the gutters clearing of leaves, leaving gutters running clear.
- Vent Gear: Serviced vent gear, greased and checked functionality and removed debris/moss from vent cills.
- Thermal Screen: Removed existing shading in glasshouse, replaced old supporting nylon wires with new. Replaced damaged/bent leading edge tube. Installed new covering material, fixed with new clips. Installed new draught pelmets at edges.

The Result:
The implemented solutions led to significant improvements:
- Re-Glazing: Enhanced Insulation and Energy Efficiency
Replacing old glazing with high-performance materials significantly improves the insulation of the greenhouse, helping to regulate temperature more effectively. This not only creates an optimal environment for plants but also reduces heating costs. Sealing gaps caused by frame movement prevents draughts and water ingress, protecting plants from adverse weather and minimising energy loss. - Gutter Clean: Improved Water Management
Clearing gutters of leaves and debris ensures proper drainage, preventing water overflow and potential damage to the greenhouse structure. Clean gutters also reduce the risk of algae growth and pests, maintaining a healthier growing environment. - Vent Gear Service: Reliable Ventilation System
Servicing the vent gear and removing moss and debris ensures smooth operation and prolongs the life of the ventilation system. Properly functioning vents improve airflow, regulate temperature, and maintain humidity levels, creating ideal growing conditions for your plants. - Thermal Screen Replacement: Enhanced Temperature Control and Efficiency
Installing a new thermal screen with updated materials and support systems provides better control of light and heat within the greenhouse. The new draught pelmets and improved leading edge tube prevent air leakage, further optimising climate control.
